Opening of the exhibition Active Grieving: The Aesthetic Activism of ACT UP Montréal

MEM - Centre des mémoires montréalaises

We’re delighted to invite you to the opening of a new exhibition in the MEM’s Kiosque area: Active Grieving: The Aesthetic Activism of ACT UP Montréal, developed by the Archives gaies du Québec, with the MEM’s support.

Through photographs, activist archives, artefacts and firsthand accounts, this exhibition traces the history of ACT UP Montréal. Between 1990 and 1993, the group transformed the grief caused by the HIV/AIDS epidemic into a powerful lever for political, artistic and social action. In a context marked by government inaction and a health emergency, ACT UP Montréal members used bold activist strategies combining striking graphic design, public performances and concrete claims for rights, care and access to information.

The opening is an invitation to discover memories that are still very much alive, to appreciate the lasting legacy of these struggles, and to think together about the connections between memory, activism and solidarity. A moment to gather and celebrate the opening of the exhibition, talk about its content, and pay tribute to those who shaped this important chapter in Montréal’s history.
