Batch of History (Guided tour From cellar to attic in French and animation)

Maison St-Gabriel, historic site and museum

Discover the unique taste of our old-fashioned bread baked in our ancestral oven.

For this occasion, guide Benjamin Plante will be stationed at the wood oven until 3 p.m. explaining how bread is made and demonstrating his remarkable know-how.

The first batches of bread will be available between 2 p.m and 3 p.m. (Delays are possible)

Schedule of the activity:

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Our guide Benjamin Plante bakes fresh bread in our bread oven.

The bread will be available for purchase at our boutique. First-come, first-serve!

A unique outdoor bread oven
Take this opportunity to discover our outdoor bread oven. Often called a “summer oven”, it was made of clay in keeping with a traditional artisanal method developed in the 17th century. The inner shape of the vault rises gradually from the door to the back of the oven in order to ensure that the fire burns well. A small roof protects it from bad weather. Once the oven is thoroughly heated with a wood fire, the ashes are removed. When it reaches an adequate temperature, a batch of several loaves of bread is put in to bake. This baking process takes about 30 minutes

End the day on a musical note!

In the afternoon, we invite you to immerse yourself in the musical ambiance of New France with a performance by Ensemble Claude-Gervaise. After enjoying an ancestral loaf, come relive the history of Montreal through the magic of music! To learn more about this activity, click here.
